He pursued higher education and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in History from Middlebury College in 1979.
Following graduation, Gordon engaged in various occupations, including working as a ranch hand and a commercial pilot. He also served as a member of the Wyoming National Guard. In 1985, Mark Gordon founded the Mark Gordon Company, a natural resources consulting firm, where he served as president and CEO until 2012.
