Kate Brown, a member of the Democratic Party, was born in Spain in 1960 but grew up in Minnesota. She graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a bachelor’s degree in environmental conservation and later earned her law degree from Lewis & Clark College. Brown has a long history of serving in Oregon politics, starting with her time in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1991 to 1997, followed by her service in the Oregon Senate from 1997 to 2009, and then as the Oregon Secretary of State from 2009 to 2015. After the resignation of John Kitzhaber, Brown became the 38th governor of Oregon in 2015.
