Griffin was born in Los Angeles, California, on June 15, 1989, to Joseph Farah, a journalist of Syrian and Lebanese descent who founded the far-right website WorldNetDaily, and Judy Smagula, a Sacramento-based journalist. Griffin describes her upbringing as being “raised in the right-wing media.”
Griffin graduated from Bella Vista High School in Fair Oaks, California, in 2007 and later studied political science and journalism at Patrick Henry College, a Christian college in Purcellville, Virginia, graduating in 2011. After college, she worked as a press secretary for the House Freedom Caucus and then as the deputy press secretary to Vice President Mike Pence. In 2019, she became the press secretary for the Department of Defense before being hired as the White House Director of Strategic Communications in 2020.
