After that, he became the first Republican to take the seat in 20 years. McCrory performed as mayor of Charlotte from 1995 -2009. In April 2013, New York Times indexed McCrory as the ninth-conservative governor in the country. He gained a victory in the election to an at-large seat on the Charlotte City Council, succeeding re-election two times and serving as mayor pro tempore. He was elected mayor of Charlotte, North Carolina in 1995, ultimately administering seven terms.

She came to be the first black woman to be elected to any statewide office in North Carolina without being first nominated by a governor.
