COVID-19 Prevention: The COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) has said that “Science can’t move forward without your help!” The COVID-19 pandemic that has grabbed the whole world in its fist bringing the world to a halt is nowhere to be stopped and increasing day by day. The coronavirus disease 2019 or COVID-19 is caused by the virus called coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2).
In order to stop this pandemic, scientists all over the world are trying to bring out a vaccine for it. The COVID-19 Prevention Network (CoVPN) is also conducting studies to find safe and effective vaccines as well as antibodies to fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus.
COVID-19 Prevention Clinical Trial
However, before bringing any medicine or vaccine in the market, it is required to be tested first to know its effectiveness, result, and side-effects, if any.
The studies revealed that preventive vaccines are being created to make people healthy. As per the officials, these vaccines or antibodies will prevent the COVID-19 infection and the person will never get infected from it.
For the study of these vaccines, some volunteers participate in it and might be exposed to the virus in their everyday lives, however, won’t be exposed to the virus as a part of the conducting study.
Recently, Dr. Angela Dunn, State Epidemiologist, took to her Twitter handle to share the link of a survey for Utah volunteers. She informed that if someone is interested in taking part in the COVID-19 prevention clinical trials then they need to take a survey in which personal questions will be asked.
How To Help in the Prevention Clinical Trial?
The participation in the current or future COVID-19 prevention clinical trials is voluntary. Those who will take the survey will be able to secure their place in the list of volunteers who can take part in ongoing as well as upcoming COVID-19 prevention clinical trials.
CoVPN has listed the below-mentioned stages involved in clinical studies to test preventive vaccines and antibodies against COVID-19:
- Phase 1: This stage involves testing the product’s safety which includes the side effects of the vaccine and if the human body can tolerate it or not. It is done on a small number of healthy volunteers (20 to 100).
- Phase 2: It tests for the maximum number of doses that can be given along with the time interval and studies the response of the immune system that includes the production of antibodies. It is done on a medium-size population of volunteers (100 to 1000)
- Phase 2b: This stage looks for the effectiveness of the product and is referred to as Proof of concept or Test of concept studies. The stage is important as if the result of the vaccine is favorable then the trial can be moved ahead, however, if not then expenses of the next stages can be saved.
- Phase 3: The testing of the vaccine at this stage involves over 1000 volunteers including some volunteers who are at a higher risk of getting infected from the disease or virus.
- Phase 4: Once the vaccine is tested to be effective in curing the disease or virus, then the vaccine is tried on volunteers like children, pregnant women, etc., and are referred to as bridging studies. It is conducted on anyone who is seeking a prevention option.
However, it must be noted that to participate in the prevention of clinical trials, one must be at least 18 years old. Also, the volunteer can anytime withdraw from a study for any reason.
