Arnab Goswami case: What happened in the court with Arnab Goswami

Arnab Goswami case: Arnab Goswami moves to the High Court after his illegal arrest

Arnab Goswami case: The District Court of Alibagh in Maharashtra has sent Arnab Goswami, Editor-in-Chief of Republic TV along with two other accused to 14 days judicial custody till November 18.

The court took this decision after a six-hour-long hearing at night.

The Raigad police on Wednesday morning arrested Arnab Goswami and two others in Mumbai for allegedly instigating 52-year-old interior designer Anvay Naik to commit suicide.

Arnab was arrested from Mumbai and later taken to Alibaug in Raigad district.

What happened in court

After the high voltage drama in Mumbai and Raigad, Arnab Goswami was presented in court at around 1 pm on Wednesday. After going inside the court, Arnab accused the police of assaulting him.

The court ordered that Arnab undergo a medical examination again.

An investigation was done as per order. After this, the police again presented them before the court.

The government lawyer, the police, and Arnab Goswami presented their sides before the court.

Observation of the doctor was also taken into consideration.

One and a half-hour hearing was conducted on the medical report of the repeated investigation.

After this, the court said that they would not consider the allegations of assault because prima facie there is no evidence of this.

When Arnab was presented in the court after conducting a medical examination again, the court told him not to stand up straight and not to make strange gestures.

After this warning of the court, Arnab sat in peace. At the same time, he was screaming and claiming that the police killed him as soon as he came inside the court.

And his relatives were busy recording this entire incident.

The government lawyer demanded police custody. Arnab’s lawyer alleged that the entire investigation is baseless, while the Raigad police alleged that Arnab was not cooperating in the investigation.

He also protested against the arrest in the morning. Therefore, another FIR has been registered against him.

However, the court refused to consider the facts laid by the police.

The court said that substantial evidence is required for police custody, which the police could not produce.

Therefore, the court dismissed the police custody appeal and sent the three accused – Arnab, Feroz Sheikh, and Nitesh Sarada – to 14 days judicial custody.

Arnab Goswami has applied for bail.

His lawyer Gaurav Parkar told reporters outside the court that the order of judicial custody is a significant victory for his client.

What is the whole matter?

Two years ago, 52-year-old interior designer Anvay Naik and his mother Kumud Naik reportedly committed suicide.

He was found dead at his farmhouse in Kavir village in Alibagh taluka in May 2018.

Anvay Naik alleged in his suicide note that he and his mother decided to end their lives because Firoz Sheikh and Nitesh Sarada had not paid Rs 5.40 crore with Arnab. Feroze and Nitesh were owners of different firms.

In 2019, the Raigad police closed the case. Later, on the complaint of Naik’s daughter Adanya, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh again ordered an inquiry into the matter.

Along with Arnab’s arrest, on Wednesday, the police also arrested the officer who investigated the case of abetment to suicide.

According to the news agency PTI, that officer will also face investigation.

The Mumbai Police has registered an FIR against Arnab Goswami against his wife and two others for obstructing the arrest.

The opposition has attacked the Maharashtra government over Arnab’s arrest, while the interior designer’s family has welcomed the arrests and said that they could never forget 2018.

However, Shiv Sena MP Sanjay Raut has said that the action taken against Arnab Goswami has no relation with the Maharashtra government.
