Apple CEO Tim Cook announced the company’s plan to use generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) later in 2024. The announcement came during Apple’s annual shareholder meeting on February 28th, 2024.

Cook emphasized Apple’s belief in the transformative potential of generative AI to unlock new possibilities in areas like productivity and problem-solving.

He also talked about Apple’s significant investments in the generative AI field, hinting at the company’s commitment to becoming a major player in the AI domain.

On Wednesday, while discussing Apple’s strategy to use generative AI, Cook said that the iPhone maker sees “incredible breakthrough potential for generative AI, which is why we are currently investing significantly in this area. We believe that will unlock transformative opportunities for users when it comes to productivity, problem-solving, and more.”

Generative Artificial Intelligence (Generative AI, or GAI) is a branch of artificial intelligence that can generate human-like responses to written prompts.

It focuses on creating new content, like text, images, music, audio, and even videos, in response to prompts. Generative AI creates new data similar to the input training data.

Although a major tech firm, Apple lags behind its competitors and other big tech holdings like Microsoft and Google in using generative AI.

However, Cook assured shareholders that AI is already at work to be used in Apple’s products.

Cook said, “Every Mac powered by Apple silicon is an extraordinarily capable AI machine, and there’s no better computer for AI on the market today.”

However, Apple shareholders have voted against the proposal and have demanded the company disclose more information about its AI usage strategy and ethical guidelines for the technology.

The proposal, which gained 37.5% of votes but did not pass, was brought out by the AFL-CIO, the largest U.S. labor union federation.

Brandon Rees, deputy director for corporations and capital markets at the AFL-CIO, has commented on Apple’s disclosure policy.

He said, “Compared to other leading technology companies, Apple has been behind the curve on disclosing ethical guidelines regarding the use of artificial intelligence. We hope that Apple will enhance its disclosure practices on this important issue to investors and other stakeholders.”

Cook has not clarified when the company will detail about using generative artificial intelligence in the iPhone and other products.

However, insiders assume that Apple will disclose its AI strategy at its annual World Wide Developer Conference in June, when the company often reveals the upcoming software versions on their iPhone, Mac, and Apple Watch.
