National reading day 19th june: Schools to celebrate reading day in 'Online Mode'

Nation celebrates 25th national reading day today, the 25th edition of PN panicker memorial national reading day is dedicated in the memory of the father of library moment in Kerala, ‘ PN panicker’ who died on June 19.

The central board of secondary education is celebrating the national reading day today and has advised schools to continue the celebration of reading month in online mode from today onwards.

Panicker started his first library ‘Sanadanadharmam’ as a teacher in his hometown in 1926.

Puthuvayil Narayana Panicker was born on March 1, 1909, in Jamjamjum to Govinda Pillai and Janaky Amma at Neelamperoor.

The Department of Posts honoured Panicker by issuing a postage stamp on June 21 2004.


His birth centenary was celebrated under the auspices of this P. N. Panicker Foundation in 2010.

The reading month will be celebrated from June 19 to July 18.

Contributions of PN panicker :

Panicker drove the development of Thiruvithaamkoor Granthasala Sangham (Travancore Library Association) in 1945 with 47 country libraries. The adage of this association was’Grow and Read’. Later on, with the formation of Kerala State in 1956, it became Kerala Granthasala Sangham (KGS). He headed out to the towns of Kerala, announcing the value of contemplating. He prevailing with regards to carrying a few 6,000 libraries to this system. Grandhasala Sangham won the prestigious’Krupsakaya Award’ from UNESCO. Panicker was the General Secretary of Sangham for a long time, before 1977 when the State Government took it over. It turned into the Kerala State Library Council, utilizing financing and a course of action.
