Soumitra Chatterjee acted in more than 200 films
He started his film career with the well-known director Satyajit Ray’s film ‘Apur Sansar’. After this, he played the role of Feluda in ‘Joy Baba Felunath’.
Saumitra Chatterjee, who has won the National Award for his performance several times, was also awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in the year 2012.
In 2004, he was awarded the Padma Bhushan, India’s third-highest civilian honour. He was also awarded the highest civilian award of France, Lézon d’Or.

Soumitra Chatterjee was born on January 19, 1935, in Krishnanagar, Nadia district in West Bengal.
He had his primary education in Krishnanagar. From the age of studying in school, Soumitra started acting.

During his college days, one of his friends introduced him to Satyajit Ray. At that time, this small meeting later turned into a deep friendship between the two. After making a debut with Satyajit Ray’s film, he worked with him in many more films.
In an interview to film critic biographer Massey Seton, he said, “When Satyajit Ray asked me what I wanted to do, I had no answer. I knew more about the difference in acting on stage and in films at that time. I did not know. I was afraid I would not overact. “
He played many types of characters in films. In ‘Shonar Killa’, he appeared as a detective like Sherlock Holmes, in ‘Devi’ he became a groom to follow the rules, ‘Abhijan’ became an angry North Indian taxi driver and ‘Ashani Sankat’ I was seen as a quiet priest.
He also played an important role in Satyajit Ray’s film ‘Charulata’, the story of Rabindranath Tagore, who received the Nobel Prize.

Soumitra Chatterjee was Satyajit Ray’s favourite actor, and Satyajit used to give him books to read on cinema. On Sunday, the two used to watch Hollywood movies together and discuss.
Chatterjee once said, “What he used to do was not without reason, it was not like that he used to take me for entertainment on Sunday.”
Satyajit Ray said that Soumitra is an excellent actor, but if he is “given a bad story, his acting will be the same”.
Satyajit Ray died in the year 1992. During that time, Soumitra said in an interview, “Not a single day has passed when I have not remembered Satyajit Ray or talked about him. He has always been present in my life as an inspiration. I get inspired whenever I think about them. “
